Senator Val for Albert?
While she has not yet officially put in her papers, Senator Valerie Woods is very close to making a decision on whether she will contest the Albert Division for the People’s United Party. We met Woods this afternoon preparing to canvass the division she grew up in and where some family members, including her mother, still live. She told us that she has been getting good feedback from area residents, and believes she has the message and tools to succeed. But, might she ‘mash the corn’ of fellow senator and incumbent caretaker Paul Thompson?

“The deadline to submit applications for you to be a candidate, to apply to be standard bearer, is Friday; I haven’t done that as yet. What I have been doing, because of the amount of encouragement and support I’ve been getting from the division itself, is to run and get involved more. I’ve just been canvassing the area, listening to people, getting into homes, and get a sense of what people’s views are on, one, politics in general, on Belize, on the Albert division, if they feel that the current P.U.P. representative is looking after their needs or taking their issues where it needs to be taken, and just to get a better understanding. I guess we’ll know by Friday who has an interest in contesting the Albert Division; might not necessarily just be myself or even my colleague, Senator Thompson. A couple of other people might; you don’t know. The deadline is Friday at four. Obviously, once I’ve made that decision and I am very firm in it, then I will do the necessary courtesy calls that one might expect.”

“Now, if it turns out that there is more than one person including you who has interest in running in the division and put your names down to run for the division, how would you approach a contested convention, as opposed to endorsements which the party seems to have had a lot of in the start of this campaign season?”

“I would approach it like how I approach anything else that I consider a challenge and that I go after. Diligently; I am very organized, and I will be talking to the people. at the end of the day I will try and cover as much ground as I can within the four weeks that they have allotted to do that, because really I consider this thing to be very straightforward: if you have people that are interested to represent you, you the people who reside here and vote here, you get to decide who you want to be your P.U.P. representative; it’s as simple as that.”
The convention for the division is expected to be held on June seventeenth.
