P.M. Issues Support for Belmopan Chief
A criminal investigation into an attack on the residence of Mayor Khalid Belisle in the Cohune Walk area of Belmopan is still open. The split-level, two storey abode came under fire from an unknown gunman who unleashed as many as eight bullets, riddling the façade of the structure, as well as damaging the bumper and tire of Belisle’s fiancée’s vehicle. In the wake of Monday night’s episode, Prime Minister Dean Barrow has reached out to Belisle, lauding him as central to the future of the U.D.P. During his press conference on Wednesday, the PM spoke on the violent occurrence.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“For such a thing to happen to any individual, any politician is terrible, but for it to happen to Khalid Belisle whom we all know, and I don’t care what side of the political fence you are on, to be an extremely bright, talented, honest, sincere, genuine, hardworking individual is absolutely terrible. Khalid is without a doubt central to the future of the United Democratic Party and I hope, first of all, that the police would be able to find out who did this, but as well that it would not act to discourage Khalid from going full tilt at his political career. In speaking to him, he made clear that indeed he was not going to be deterred and so that was comforting. I don’t know that the full import of what had happened had by then had sunk in, but he was incredibly cool, but notwithstanding, he clearly has to be very, very much concerned, not to say alarmed. So I really hope that the police can, in fact, get to the bottom of it and that there would not be anything coming even close to any kind of a repetition of the incident.”
