Citco Down to 5 Days to Repay S.S.B. Contributions

Oscar Arnold

A few days ago, the Social Security Board issued a demand note for payment of outstanding contributions to the Belize City Council collected from employees, but not paid by the former Darrell Bradley administration. On May fifteenth, City Hall received the letter from the S.S.B. saying that for the period November to December 2017, an assessment showed that the council owed over seventy-seven thousand dollars in contributions for employees’ liability under the substantive laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000-2003. A portion of that debt was paid, leaving an outstanding balance of thirty-four thousand two hundred and thirty dollars and eighty cents to the current council. In a one-on-one with Deputy Mayor Oscar Arnold, he told News Five today that CitCo has five days to pay to avoid court proceedings from the S.S.B.

“These were contributions that were taken out from employees’ salaries as well as the employer portion that should have been paid in—for example, November should have been paid in December, December in January; that sort of thing. But the demand note clearly states and it is coming from the Social Security Board, clearly states that there are outstanding amounts from those periods.”

“Sir, but this is not during this P.U.P. administration; this is for…”

Oscar Arnold

“No, the election was March seventh and we came to office March eighth, so this would have been a few month ahead of our time. But we are there now; we will definitely take ownership of it, but it just goes to show and to dispel rumors where the previous city administrator and even the previous mayor said that these things were paid up to date.”
