Police Meet and Greet George Street Residents

This evening, officers attached to Precinct Two in Belize City took to the streets to meet with residents in the areas of Euphrates and Amara Avenues, as well as nearby George Street.  The brief session was part of the department’s weekly outreach where cops learn from the public its concerns regarding safety and citizen security on a smaller scale.  Assistant Superintendent John Moreira is the Officer Commanding Precinct Two.

“What happened [is that] recently we have been seeing an increase in the [spate] of crimes in this area, you know, hence the reason we decided that we will do meet and greet in this area for today, meeting members of the public, the residents and finding out from them actually, their concerns and how best we can assist them in the fight against crime.”

“Have you had an opportunity to speak with the residents and, if yes, what are they saying about the level of criminal activity in this area?”

ASP John Moreira

“Well, in particular, on this Amara Avenue we have spoken to several persons and they are saying that they feel safe in this area, this part of town, except for neighboring areas’ streets.  So they feel very safe and they are happy for our presence in this area at this time.”

“Sir, we understand that you all intend to visit George Street as well which is historically a location that is anti-police.  How do you approach them to try to at least open conversation and dialogue?”

ASP John Moreira

“Well, as you know, we know that George Street has always been a problem area, however, we need to go in there and let the people know that the police are here to help them, you know, and they as well need to help us to make the area safe.”

“In terms of the business community, what are business owners within this precinct sharing with you guys in terms of the safety of their establishments and what-have-you?”

ASP John Moreira

“Well [members of[ the business community are expressing that they need to see more police presence; however, I can safely say that there is police presence but I think we need to do more.  And they have also expressed that they will assist, especially with resources, be it donations or some form of resources.”
