Robbery Likely Motive for Death of Carlton Moreira
Police are seeking two persons in connection with Wednesday afternoon’s murder of Carlton Moreira in an alley between Banak and Mayflower Streets. While the area is known for both external and internal gang rivalries, Moreira was not known to be a part of that world. So speculation from both police and the family is that he may have been targeted for his recent winnings from the nightly Boledo draw, though it is not clear if he had any money on him at the time he was killed.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division
“During the investigation police learned that the male person was walking in the alley when he was approached by two male persons who fired the shots in his direction, causing the above-mentioned injuries and causing his death.”

“Specifically with this there are a number of stories out there; but are you able to say if indeed he was targeted because he recently had some winnings the night before from the Boledo draw?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“What we have learned so far from family members is that yes, he had won some money and he had some money on him, and we suspect that the reason for his being shot is because they wanted the money from him.”

“Was anything stolen from him in regards to his wallet or anything personal?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“As [of] this moment, we spoke to the family in regard to any possibilities of him having any property at the time of his shooting, but up to now we haven’t gotten that response.”
Police were in the area this morning on an operation connected to recent crime, searching houses including that of area kingpins the Meighan family. They do not expect any retaliation or escalation of violence.
