Barrier Reef Has Shot at Coming Off Endangered World Heritage Site List
Belize’s world-famous Barrier Reef Reserve System could be headed off the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. This is after the World Heritage Committee found that the series of remedial actions implemented by the Ministries of Fisheries, Forestry, Environment, Sustainable Development and Natural Resources along with the Belize UNESCO office and the World Wildlife Fund have now substantially met the indicators for de-listing. It first joined the World Heritage Site list in 1996 but has been listed as being in danger since 2009. A government release issues thanks to all involved for the recent success. The final decision of the World Heritage Committee will be made in June this year at its forty-second annual meeting in Bahrain.
