O.W. College changes address to expand campus
All around the country educators are working hard, cleaning classrooms, painting buildings and dusting off textbooks, all in an effort to get ready for the kids. But every year, there seems to be more children than space. And while many schools are looking ahead trying to find ways to deal with this phenomenon, one institution from the north came up with a dramatic solution. They have decided to pick up shop and move to a new location with plenty of room for expansion. Jacqueline Woods reports.

On August twenty-fourth 1992, Orange Walk Muffles Junior College opened its doors and exactly ten years later ground was broken for the construction of a new campus. Adrian Leiva, the Dean of the college, says the relocation became necessary after a tremendous growth spurt in both student population and the number of programmes offered by the institution.

“Muffles Junior College started out as a very small junior college ten years ago with thirty-eight students, one Associate’s Degree programme. It has grown rapidly and steadily and today it is offering seven Associate Degree programmes to three hundred and eleven students, and we all have to offer these programmes in five classrooms.”
The future college will be situated just outside Orange Walk Town on the San Estevan Road. Although the site has been chosen and the building plans have been drawn, the college is now relying on support from past graduates and the business community to make the project a reality.

“There is a possibility, if we pool our resources together, we get graduates and alumni and students and the community on a whole to give financial pledges to the institution and to solicit funds from funding agencies, I am sure that this project can come through.”
Leiva is appealing to the four hundred and seventy one graduates of Muffles College to assist them in the future development of their alma mater. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.
