Police will charge caye caretaker with murder

Forty-nine year old U.S. National Robert Moore remains in police custody at the Punta Gorda police station. Moore, a caretaker of Frank’s Caye, was detained by authorities after he shot Paul Westby and Dorla Martin around 7:30 on Wednesday morning. Westby, who received a gunshot wound to the chest, died on the spot while his common-law wife, who was shot in the abdomen, remains in a critical, but stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. At the time of his arrest, Moore told police that he asked the couple to leave because they were trespassing. But after the man and woman pulled out a spear gun and a bottle he shot them in self-defence. Today, However, police say their investigation has revealed that there may be more to the story than what the accused has told them. According to police sources, Moore and his common-law wife knew Westby and Martin and that the couple had not just arrived on the caye but had been on the island for at least two days prior to the incident. It’s not certain what transpired between the couples on the caye, but reports are that their relationship had soured. At the time of the shooting, there were allegedly several witnesses and all have been detained. Moore is expected to be charged with murder.
