NEMO and Private Citizens Offer Assistance to Fire Victim’s
Samir Nunez and his father David survived the inferno since they were able to get out of the burning building. While the sixteen-year-old is at home with his relatives, David remains in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, having received third degree burns to most of the body. In the aftermath of the deadly fire, eight other persons have been displaced; left without a roof over their heads. Manuel Heredia Junior says that NEMO is providing assistance and there are numerous fundraising activities to help to ease the pain of the affected families.
Manuel Heredia Jr., Area Rep., Belize Rural South
“It is two buildings that were completed down and one that was partially burnt. And NEMO has done its part. This morning, they arrived twelve mattresses, stoves, tanks, goodies and so forth. Our people have been extremely good in responding. I believe that when that tragedy had happened, we collected almost eighty thousand dollars and today, I have seen the response of the business community; at least seven, eight groups that are in the dollar drive and the radiothon itself. From here I am moving to the radio to make sure that I am there for a few hours also, encouraging people too. But we are known as very good in doing these types of activities. San Pedro is a very united community. There are a number of groups going to businesses, dollar drive in the street, trying to do as much as possible to see if we can bring some assistance to the families in need. I personally, the mayor, we are doing whatever it takes to make sure that we can bring some assistance to these families.”
