A Fatal RTA in Toledo Claims the Life of an Elderly Cyclist
Sixty-eight year old Adolphus Selvin Bahadur was knocked down and killed in Toledo this morning. Sometime around seven-thirty, Bahadur was on a bike on the outskirts of Forest Home, some four miles from Punta Gorda Town, heading to Elridgeville when he was hit from behind by a police truck. The driver, police corporal forty-year-old Alexander Salam attached to Belmopan police, said that he was approaching miles five and half on the San Antonio Road when he hit Bahadur who was riding his bike. This evening we spoke with Bahadur’s nephew via phone. Wilfred Jacobs says that it appears that Salam, who was at a wake on Monday night, fell asleep at the wheel. Here’s what he had to say about the fatal accident that claimed his uncle’s life.

“Mr. Bahadur does reside in Elridgeville, but he came down early this morning to sell some crabs and actually the police vehicle, that happened around seven-thirty and eight. The police vehicle was coming his direction and he was on the side of the road with a bag of crabs and his bike. What take place there is that it seems to be the police officer who was driving fell asleep, swerve off the road and knocked Mr. Bahadur to the middle of the road. That is when we ran out and picked him up and put him in the same vehicle and took him to the hospital. They went to check him and about an hour and a half later he succumbed to his injuries.”

“Okay, so I understand this truck has a Belmopan license plate. I understand that he officers may have been at a wake?”
Via Phone: Wilfred Jacobs
“Yes. There was a wake in San Antonio Village and it seems to me that these officers were at the wake and they were going up for the funeral this morning and they were sleeping or something and that is what I believe caused the accident.”
Andrea Polanco
“Is there anything to indicate, Mr. Jacobs, or have you heard if this officer was under the influence of alcohol?”
Via Phone: Wilfred Jacobs
“Actually we didn’t get any information on that or any feedback at all.”
