OJ Elrington for U.D.P. Freetown Standard Bearer

On the other side of the political arena, Orson “OJ” Elrington has confirmed he will be seeking election for the U.D.P. in the Freetown area. The other known contender is Senator Carla Barnett, who was trounced in the last election by Area Representative, Francis Fonseca. Freetown has remained a stronghold of the People’s United Party since Fonseca rose to political power in that constituency. While the next election cycle is less than two years away, the United Democratic Party is already fielding candidates to contest the seat. Earlier today, outspoken Elrington announced his candidacy for Freetown. Elrington’s candidacy surfaces at a time when Barnett is coming under fire for lands deals to family and Freetown constituents, during her tenure at the Ministry of Lands which ended last Friday. Elrington says his family’s political navel string was buried in that division.

“Myself and my family, as everybody knows, has had a lifelong commitment to serving the people of Belize and to serving this nation. And so, I thought that it was the opportune time for me to take up the ultimate challenge and offer myself for the people of Freetown.”

“Yes, this is the first time that I am allowing myself to be a candidate. For those that know I have been working in the background and in fact, over the years I’ve been asked on several occasions to offer myself as a candidate and respectfully refused those offers and right now I’ve garnered the necessary experience, that I have garnered the necessary support and I am now ready to take on the challenge to serve the people of Freetown. Well that is where my family, that is where the roots are laid on Sixth Street. That is where we grew up, so I thought that there would be no better division to offer myself for service for than for Freetown.”
