Sugar Cane Crop Season Officially Closed

Up north, the sugar cane crop at A.S.R./B.S.I. is officially closed. In a release issued today, the millers say that the final sugar cane fields have been cut and the last cane laden trucks trickled on Wednesday, marking the end of the 2017 -2018 grinding season. Farmers were able to deliver all their cane and maintained very good cane quality throughout the crop season, despite the weather challenges.  The release says that one million two hundred and seventy-four-thousand nine hundred and ninety-seven million metric tons of sugarcane were delivered and milled. This figure is approximately sixteen thousand metric tons lower than last year. Sugar production was around one hundred and forty-two thousand tons, the same as last year, but with less cane milled. The final numbers on sugar production, quality and processing will be reported at a later date.
