No Arrests for String of Robberies

Alejandro Cowo

There’s been a string of robberies across the City in recent weeks. The robbers started targeting business owners in the downtown area, but after police implemented the ‘operation safe zone,’ the criminals moved to the north side of the city. Police have been warning businesses to keep vigilant and report any suspicious activities. And that is what one business did a few days ago. Two men were observed sitting in a vehicle in a parking lot and the cops were called in. Well, for some it may have appeared that police finally got a break, but the men were questioned and released. And while it is suspected that there may be a ring of thieves operating in the city, police say they are still investigating that angle.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“We have always mentioned to the public that they must be aware and focused on their business places with the numerous robberies happening in the city and across the country. And if they see someone suspicious or vehicles parked in their compound for extra amount of time, they must call us and that is one of the calls that we received and police responded there. They were searched and nothing was found on them. They were detained, questioned and released thereafter.”

“Was any of these persons a person of interest in other robberies in the City, particularly in the north side?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, they have been persons of interest for us and that is why we have alerted the business people that when they see certain suspicious persons to call us immediately. “

Reporter

“In fact, all it was is two guys hanging out in a parking lot?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Well, you know, as we had mentioned, it is not normal to go and sit in a parking lot in a vehicle for some time and that can cause suspicion to anybody. We are inviting the public to be aware and call us – and that is what they did.”
