Attorney General Throws His Hat Into the Political Arena: Mike Peyrefitte for Port Loyola
Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte first ran as a candidate for the United Democratic Party in Freetown in 2008. He was defeated by the P.U.P.’s Francis Fonseca and since then he took a backseat to electoral politics, serving the party and the Barrow administration in various capacities. But Peyrefitte is re-entering the political fray as a hopeful in a different constituency. The void that is being left in the departure of three-time Port Loyola Area Representative Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez will see four U.D.P. candidates contesting the standard bearer’s position. But, does Mike Peyrefitte have his eyes set on the leadership of the party? Here’s how he responded to that question.
Michael Peyrefitte, U.D.P. Candidate, Port Loyola
“I’ve put in my name to contest a convention for the Port Loyola division. You cannot put in your name for leadership if you are not a member of the house. So I’m not yet even a standard bearer to represent for a party to go against the PUP in one division and you done deh da leadership! I am humbled by your high aspirations for me. I am miles away from that, if at all. That’s not on my mind. My mind right now is to defeat Dean Samuels, Shane Castillo and Phillip Willoughby in a convention that will occur sometime between November and January of this year and next year. Anything beyond that, give me a break man. One step at a time.”
Peyrefitte faces competition from Dean Samuels, Shane Castillo and Phillip Willoughby in a four-way race for Port Loyola.
