Wicked 11 evens cricket series

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into this fat issue of Sports Monday. Their previous transgressions left the Wicked 11 perched on the edge of desperation Saturday as they played host to Sunrise of Lord’s Bank in game 2 of the Harrison Parks Cricket Championship. Only a win today at home in Flowers Bank could provide salvation for the collective ambition of the Wicked 11 to take the 2002 title.

Of course the faithful converged in diverse colours and vast numbers to fire up the Wicked ones for the tremendous task of stopping Sunrise.

We join the action with Wicked 11 at bat, having already amassed some 130 runs. But the Sunrise bowler comes up with a spectacular pitch for the eighth out of the side. Sunrise could have helped itself to another quick out here, but the outfielder seems to have butter on his hands, he drops the pill.

Parks bowls to Robinson and Flower’s Bank runs for 1. And then this bouncer is served up only to be flagged for 4. Add 6 more when Robinson catches up with this pitch as the Wicked ones continue to roll.

How bout this punch from Robinson; it’s good for another 6 runs. However, Robinson’s run ends when the Wicked keeper tags him out as Wicked 11 finishes with 172 runs.

Now folks, can you believe Sunrise could only muster 23 runs in their turn at bat at Flower’s Bank? Hey, it could be the geography. Well the truth is stranger than fiction and now we all wait to see the decisive game three for the Harrison Parks Cricket title this Saturday at Bermudian Landing.

Changing gears, lets head to the City Centre for Friday night’s Capital Life Basketball feature as Aba Iseni, which means one love, of Dangriga makes its final bid for a season win against the five-time champions the Raiders.

If you see the stands empty, well the fans are savvy enough to know it’s a mismatch as Darwin Carter of the Raiders demonstrates.

Brandon Titus then finds the other Raider guard Dwight Myvette and he makes it an 11-0 run with this 3. Myvette and Carter then combine for this two to make it a 17-zip opening run for the Raiders, can you believe it.

And folks, this is how Aba Iseni finally gets on the scoreboard, from the charity stripe. But at least they can’t say they got no Iseni on this one.

Myvette then spots Thomas unattended and he crushes this one home.

Bart Sanchez wants 3; Bart Sanchez gets 3. And at the half the Raiders have run up a 56-29 score.

Okay, we’re into second half and this is one of Dangriga’s highlights. First the interception, then the execution.

However, Aba Iseni highlights were few in numbers, while for the Raiders it’s a full length reel as Myvette serves up for Carter who alley oops-hey Carter, you look good my man. It’s Carter-time again people, and this time he strikes for 3.

The Raiders go on to post the 94-65 blowout without breaking a sweat.

Meanwhile folks, up north Orange Walk Shell Music Centre crushed Corozal’s Kaus at the People’s Stadium Saturday night to confirm its appearance in the 4-team playoff and give B.T.L. Nets a new lease on life.

O.W. won 94-90 in regulation. Roger Favela led with 21 points, Mark Bainton posted the first triple double of the season. He had 20 points, 13 assist, 10 rebounds, while big man Wendell Robinson struck for 13 points, 12 rebounds. Sugar City rolls into the post-season play.

Going into the playoffs, San Cas U.B. is seeded first with an impressive 7-3 record; the Raiders second and Orange Walk third. They are both assured of making the post-season play. In fact, these two teams kick off semi-final round play when Orange Walk plays host to the Raiders Saturday night July twentieth at the People’s Stadium for a best of three series.

Friday night here in Belize City at the City Centre, San Cas U.B. will open up against the winner of Wednesday night’s ticket at the City Centre. Wednesday night B.T.L. Nets, thanks to O.W.’s win over Corozal, faces Corozal. If the Nets win by 8 they’re in, anything less Corozal is in. And of course Channel 5 will keep you posted. This season has certainly turned out to be a hold not more parity than was expected, but of course a whole lot more talent was also imported, so look out for fireworks.

On the cycling scene, Quinton “The Baddest” Hamilton picked up his third straight Benque Viejo Cycle Classic, winning the Tony Leslie sponsored event yesterday, beating out archrival Ariel Rosado in a head-on sprint. Jeffrey Zelaya pulled up 3rd, Roger Troyer 4th and Ernest Meighan 5th.

Meanwhile, we are yet to hear the results from Jaheed Smith’s performance inside the Junior World Championships staged at Kingston, Jamaica. As soon as we do, we will certainly pass it on.

We also want to take this opportunity to give our congratulations to the many athletes who will represent us at the upcoming Commonwealth Games which kicks off on July twenty-second in Great Britain. We have cycling, we have track and field, and we have shooting. Of course, remember represent the Sub umbra floreo well.

That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
