Gas Depots in Residential Areas Are Risky

The location of the fire at the corner of Mopan and Mahogany Streets sits directly across from Brown’s Gas Depot.  Had the fire not been contained, it could have proven dangerous.  Station Officer Orin Smith explains the dangers of gas depots within residential communities. He says that Brown’s has been there for a very long time, but the department recognizes the threats posed in the event there is a massive fire. Smith speaks about where they are on the issue and how those conversations are progressing.

“In years gone past, the area where that depot sits was designated as an industrial site. Over the years, encroachment of residential structures has over populated the area. That should not have occurred in the first place. We are presently working on trying to establish specific zoning for industrial areas and residential. As such we have ensured that no new depots can be established within the city limits.”

“Have you spoken to City Council in that regard and what are the plans to either move the depot or reassign it to another location?”

“We have touched based with City Council – both previous administration and the present. They understand our perspective and support it. In regards to having the ones in the City moving out that is still on the drawing table”
