Nisani Garcia Charged for Orange Walk Murder of Alberto Vargas Jr.

Nisani Garcia

Police have moved swiftly to crack the murder of Alberto Vargas Junior in Orange Walk.  A Belize City construction worker was arrested and charged; twenty-four-year-old Nisani Daniel Garcia is believed to be the triggerman in the execution on the Belize/Corozal Road on Tuesday night some-time around eight. Police believe that Garcia was one of two persons in the vehicle with Vargas Junior right before he was shot twice in the neck.  Jose Medina was also in the vehicle when Vargas stopped at a food stand.  The authorities have recovered four expended nine millimeter shells from inside the vehicle.  While police say they have the man who did it, they have not yet determined why Vargas Junior was killed. Here’s what they have so far on the investigation.

Joseph Myvett

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Initial police investigation reveals that the deceased, Alberto Vargas, was along with one Jose Medina travelling in a south to north direction in a green ford escape vehicle when they had stopped to pick up a passenger on the Belize-Corozal Road. And shortly after picking up the passenger, the driver of the vehicle, Mr. Medina, decided to stop to order food and in the process of stopping he heard a commotion in the vehicle which caused him to alight the vehicle and there after he heard several gun shots. Upon his return to the vehicle, he observed the deceased Alberto Vargas slumping and bleeding. He was transported to the northern regional hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have one suspect in detention in relation to this incident.”

“Police know who this other passenger may be and is that person you are looking for?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“We believe that is the suspect we have in custody.”

Reporter

“And have you all been able to ascertain why it was that Mr. Vargas was shot and killed?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No. We are looking at several angles which we are looking at in that regard.”

Reporter

“Has Mr. Medina provided police with any possible reasons as to why this passenger was picked up?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Well, he was interviewed and he has provided certain information which the police is following.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, is there anything to indicate if the passenger knew Mr. Vargas? Were they friends?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I would not be in a position to answer that at this time.”

Andrea Polanco

“Also, sir, there was a report that there may have been a drug transaction taking place at that time when they made that stop – is there anything to indicate that anything of that nature may have been happening when he was killed?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“That information was also received by the police which we are following up on as a part of the leads into the investigation. Four nine millimeter expended shells were found on the back passenger seat of the vehicle.”

Reporter

“So, that supports the theory that the shooting actually happened in the vehicle itself and between two passengers?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes.”
