He Pleaded Guilty, Was Sentenced but Now Abimael Pott is a Free Man

Abimael Pott

Guilty of causing the death of nineteen-year-old Shamir Gonzalez, this morning twenty-four-year-old Abimael Pott walked out of the courtroom of Justice Colin Williams feeling like a free man. Pott was originally charged for the murder of Gonzalez which occurred seven years ago at Louisiana Government School in Orange Walk Town. He was convicted and sentenced to life behind bars. Pott appealed the sentence and the Court of Appeal set aside the sentence and ordered a retrial. Pott then pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Justice Williams sentenced Pott to twelve years behind bars. However, Justice Williams deducted four years since Pott pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. Taking into consideration several mitigation factors, Justice Williams further deducted two more years, leaving Pott with a six-year sentence-six years in which he has served on remand. Justice Williams took this into consideration, stating that Pott had served more than six years behind bars and as such he was allowed to exit the courtroom. Pott was involved in a brawl with Gonzalez resulting in Pott hitting Gonzalez to the head with a pipe. Gonzalez died on the spot.
