BCVI gets ready for annual summer camp

If you are the parent of a child with special needs, don’t worry, this summer, they’ll have programmes to participate in too. One of them is being hosted by the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired. This year, sixty-eight children, all of whom are visually challenged, will spend part of their summer socialising with their peers from across the country. News 5 caught up with Rehabilitation Co-ordinator, Joan Samuels who told us more about the activities that will be taking place at the two week camp.

“It’s a camp that the children look forward to every year. They learn these extra special activities like Braille, learning to read and write Braille, learning to handle their no vision equipment. We take them on trips, they socialise. It is kind of a group counselling, peer counselling situation where things they wouldn’t say to us or parents, they discuss among themselves.”

“You all have been pretty busy, getting everything prepared for this year’s camp, where will it take place?”

“It’s at the Santa Familia Monastery in Santa Elena for the fourth year. It’s quite a nice place, safe and the children do have a comfortable bed to be in, they can get to the river everyday and almost every place where we would like to take them on trips, we can reach it in a relatively short time.”

Samuel says, thanks to Tropic Air, this year, some children will also get the opportunity to fly for free to the cayes. The programme starts on July first.
