DYS Trains Women in Cosmetology

The Department of Youth Services has a six-week cosmetology training taking place at the Yabra Community Center. The training will see the ladies get a level one certificate which they can use to generate employment opportunities.  The programme is being funded by the Youth and Community Transformation Project. Today, we spoke with PR Officer Renata Samuels about the community-based initiative which is helping unemployed, young women acquire a new skill.

“They come in from Monday to Thursday from one to four to do mani-pedi and everything when it comes to customer service and they learn the skill. When they are finished they will graduate with a level one certificate proving that they have done the trade here. It is really open to everyone and it is basically people from the Yabra Community who come to the center and want to learn the skill. The goal is that they can actually be self employed if they would like to be or go to a salon and show them the certificate. Because they are teaching them the basic skills and they can add on to that a little more. They have to practice at home and bring it and show the instructors and then they get to work on people.”
