Just after 8:00 last night, these three vehicles, a dump truck, a pickup and a car collided between mile eight and nine on the Northern Highway.
According to police reports, a ten wheeler dump truck was travelling towards Belize City, but as it reached this location, by Williamson Industries Limited, it collided into an F-150 pickup. That crash caused the truck to go out of control, which then slammed head-on into a Honda Civic car that was travelling towards Orange Walk.
Inside the car was thirty-four year old Eloy Perera, his common-law-wife and young daughter.
Perera, who was driving the vehicle was found dead behind the steering wheel. His common-law-wife and daughter survived the crash and were rushed to K.H.M.H. Back at the accident scene, it would take a team from the National Fire and Rescue Service forty-five minutes to retrieve Perera’s body from the twisted metal.
The official report from the Transport Department as to the cause of this accident has yet to be released to the media. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.
According to hospital officials, Perera’s common-law wife Oly Navarette is under observation, while their eleven-year-old daughter Lucille is being treated for a fractured leg.
As the Perera family mourns their loss, other families are grateful to have their loved ones alive tonight. The occupants of these vehicles survived after they flipped over today at another area of asphalt that has seen more than its fair share of accidents: between mile thirty-one and thirty-three on the Western Highway. Motorists are asked to drive within the speed limit and remember that roads are especially slippery in the rainy weather.
