Suspect arrested in O.W. rampage

Story Picture
One bright spot in an otherwise bad day for police occurred in Orange Walk, where it appears that authorities are making progress in solving last week’s spree of murder, rape and robbery in the north. News 5’s Ann-Marie Williams reports.

Ann-Marie Williams, Reporting

Twenty-seven year old Mark Vega of Orange Walk Town was today arraigned in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape, conspiracy to commit rape, carnal knowledge, robbery and unnatural crime.

Magistrate Robert Ordonez told Vega that bail would be denied due to his prior offences and the already high level of crime on the streets. Vega will spend almost a month on remand until his day in court, set for July seventeenth.

Police say Vega was positively identified as one of the four men who robbed Enrique and Susanna Petkau last Thursday at gunpoint and stole their Plymouth Voyager van. Similar identification was made on the armed robbery in Jasmine Restaurant as well as the rape of a young woman at the People’s Stadium.

Police say they are still gathering evidence to prove that it was Vega who shot Susanna Petkau to death before levying a murder charge against him. Ann-Marie Williams for News 5.

Police are looking for two more suspects, including Luis Gabriel Urbina of Orange Walk and a fifteen year old Honduran resident of Trial Farm.
