B.T.L. Nets upset by Orange Walk

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley with your latest version of Sports Monday. League leading B.T.L. Nets took its undefeated record in the Capital Life Tournament Friday night at the City Centre against Orange Walk’s Music Centre, a team that had lost three straight going in.

Maybe this is probably why the visitors had travelled to North America in search of help and brought back number eight, Windell Robinson, who we see here at the tip off against the mighty Claude “Too Tall” Jones of the B.T.L. Nets.

Robinson responds immediately for O.W., hitting the first shot of the ballgame as the Music Centre opens with the lead. In fact, O.W. runs off eight straight unanswered points when Caesar “Speedy” Novelo knocks down this 3.

People, the city team finds itself down 17-2 with 12 minutes to go in the first half before Keith Acosta hits B.T.L.’s first field goal of the night. But O.W. comes right back with Derek Adderley, who hangs and hits. New O.W. big man Robinson, gets the rebound and makes the stick back people.

Still down, big time B.T.L. goes to Greg Bent and he knocks down the open look. A.C. Augustine in heavy traffic hits the bucket, picks up the foul and hits the freebie. Now here’s the long jump from Jr. Westby and at the half the Nets are down by eight.

In second half the Music Centre continues to maintain its lead and thanks to a total collapse of the Nets defence, Caesar “Speedy” Novelo gets the easiest 2 of the night.

At the other end Greg Bent shows off his left-hand finish to keep the Nets in the ballgame. David Laqua then goes baseline and he strikes for 2 more.

Keith Acosta, suffering from a twisted ankle one-hands this finish for 2 points. A hobbled Acosta shows real determination as he strikes for 2 more points here.

And when A.C. Augustine hits this difficult bucket, the Nets find themselves down by 1 points and would eventually tie the score at 65 apiece with 6 minutes to go. However, “Speedy” Novelo launches for 3 and he connects in money time.

And down the stretch O.W. Music Centre was able to hit their free throws to post the 84-78 big time upset.

Now lets check in on the Tony Leslie Amateur Basketball Competition where B.T.L. Sparks goes into game two of the female championship against Brodies Advance.

With 25 seconds to go and B.T.L. up by 1, its Tracey Garnett on the line in an attempt to extend the lead but misses both.

On the trip downcourt, Sylvia Castillo is fouled and she hits both to give Advance the lead. And that’s the difference in the ball game as Brodies Advance ties the series at 1 apiece.

Turning to the cricket scene, undefeated Wicked 11, known for its offensive prowess pulled out a masterful defensive show against the torrid bats of the Taliban in game 2 of their semi-final series in the Harrison Parks Cricket Championship at Burrell Boom on Saturday.

Michael Muslar swings and is caught out easily. Here’s another defensive gem as this well hit ball is caught at the 6 boundary. And after 10 wickets, Taliban had only mustered 41 runs, which Wicked 11 overran with 3 bats for 42 and are now into the championship series, the first one there. This is after Eddison Robinson batted in 28 runs, while Lawrence Banner and Kevin Flowers struck for 5 wickets apiece.

Meanwhile, game 1 of the other semi-final series found Sunrise of Lord’s Bank posting 129 runs all out at Bermudian Landing against Long Journey of Gardenia. However, Long Journey had tallied 108 runs for 7 wickets when the 6:00 p.m. curfew arrived forcing a halt to the hostilities. This finish, along with game 2, should be concluded on Saturday at Bermudian Landing. Of course Wicked 11 awaits the winner to emerge for championship time.

That’s it for now, we invited you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
