P.U.P.’s Southern Caucus Says ‘NO’ to the ICJ

During a meeting held last week, the People’s United Party’s Southern Caucus met and decided to oppose going to the International Court of Justice for the Belize/Guatemala dispute to be resolved. This decision is in contradiction to the personal opinion of John Briceño, the leader of the P.U.P., which has yet to establish a formal position on the matter. According to a statement from the party’s Southern Caucus, the southern portion of the country stands the most to be negatively affected in the event of an unfavorable ruling and as such the caucus decided to declare its position- a resounding ‘NO’. That ‘NO’ is based on the southern caucus’s view that Guatemalans want the south which they say is arguably the richest, most beautiful, most pristine part of Belize. The P.U.P. Southern Caucus says it will continue to conduct its internal consultations in villages and towns in the south. Eligible voters will go to the polls on April tenth, 2019 to decide whether to take Guatemala’s unfounded claim on Belize to the ICJ for resolution.
