Professional Standards Branch to Investigate Brawl in Bella Vista
An internal investigation has been launched by the Belize Police Department to determine whether a team of officers acted outside of the law when they attempted to detain a group of unruly club goers in Bella Vista Village. There are allegations that the officers physically abused several persons, including a woman when they rounded up a group outside of a nightclub. ACP Joseph Myvett says that the Professional Standards Branch is looking into the matter but that several persons have been charged in connection with the melee in Bella Vista.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“The police received reports from officers working at a nightclub in Bella Vista, that shortly after one on Sunday, August twelfth, there was an altercation inside the nightclub which resulted in two uniformed officers who were working at the establishment attempting to detain one of the suspects. And in the process he was approached by several other persons who were within the nightclub, including a female who eventually threw beer on one of the officers. Several persons have since been arrested and charged. A report was made to the Professional Standards Branch by those affected and an ongoing investigation is in progress at this time in relation to the incident.”

“Are you able to share any details of what the persons that are accusing the officers of brutality are saying?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“Well the statements are saying that the officers overreacted in some instances and in order to prevent those who were being detained.”
