A.S.R./B.S.I. Acquires Tug Boat Valued $1.2Million
Belize Sugar Industries Limited has acquired a tugboat valued at one point two million Belize dollars. The tugboat now renamed “Shuga Pride” will be used to transport sugar one hundred and twenty-two miles up the New River, down the Caribbean, and to the deepwater port. The purchase of the tugboat is in line with B.S.I. strategy to improve the efficiency of loading raw sugar on to ocean-going vessels. According to a release from B.S.I., the strategy includes a detailed maintenance programme for barges which transport sugar from Tower Hill mill to ocean-going vessels, a reduction in the amount of raw sugar to be shipped as the company focuses on production of bagged, food-grade sugars which are exported in containers, and investment to increase barge pulling power. The tugboat is sixty-feet long and is able to operate at twelve hundred horsepower.
