Solid Waste Wants You to Recycle at Home

The Solid Waste Management Two Project, valued at ten point two million dollars funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, is being rolled out across the country since 2016. The project will see the closure of six dumpsites and the construction of six transfer stations. A component of the project, however, focuses on citizenry involvement for home recycling. Tyronne Chimilio of the Belize Solid Waste Management tells us more about this voluntary programme.

“We have already started to do the construction of a transfer station in Placencia and Punta Gorda. We have more construction works that will be taking place for Corozal, Orange Walk, Belmopan and Dangriga. So, the works are already on the way. What we want to do is to continue to educate the public about what will be taking place. One of the key aspects of this project is that we want to recover more recyclable materials. So, we will be going on a campaign for people to separate their waste in two separate bins for those persons or those communities that will benefit from this project. So, we just want people to understand that the project is ongoing and is coming. We just want people to work along with us in terms of what we want to be able to capture in terms of recovery and material. And, of course, we are improving solid waste management on a whole for the entire country.”
