Earl Trapp

Since the launch of the celebrations was hosted in San Ignacio, Mayor Earl Trapp also spoke at the ceremony. Mayor Trapp shared why Belizeans should celebrate the season and defend the eight thousand eight hundred and sixty seven square miles of Belize.

“As we look back at the 220 years of conquering our nation from the Spaniards and the thirty-seven years of our independence, it is indeed fortuitous as we prepare for the referendum in the near future to determine whether we should go to the ICJ to end the unfound claim of Guatemala to our country. We must be cognizant that our pursuit to nationhood on September 21st, 1981, was never meant to be an end to itself. Therefore, it is paramount that we reflect deeply on what this means for our independence. Our sovereignty is our affirmation of who are as Belizeans and as such our independence on another power should never run counter to the logic of protecting our national sovereignty. We must identify each other despite our diverse ethnicity that we are one as such and must trust, respect and stand together as the Baymen did to protect our nation. Now is the time to stand together and unite for one cause as our theme rightly states, Belize dah fu we – now and forever, eight thousand, eight hundred and sixty seven.”

Activities continue until Independence Day, September twenty-first. One of the highlights is the Carnival Road March which takes place on September eight.
