Story Picture
Tis the season of graduations, and one set of tassels to take flight this weekend belongs to students of the University of Belize. Approximately five hundred graduates will receive bachelor and associates degrees during commencement exercises at the Belize City Centre on Sunday morning. According to Director of Admissions and Student Affairs, Dorla Rosado, there will be two ceremonies this year, one in Belize City and the other in Toledo next weekend.

Dorla Rosado, Dir. of Admissions/Student Affairs

“We’re looking at approximately five hundred and sixty-five students graduating at the Belize City ceremony. It’s six hundred and two overall; we have thirty-seven graduating in Toledo. It’s approximately six faculties. And we have the Regional Language Centre that’s a wonderful programme, we have forty-four foreign students who’ll be participating in our graduation ceremony this year in Belize City. We have students from all over the region, Cuba, Latin America, Panama, Salvador and South America also, so it’s going to be very exciting.”

“I’m very proud of the fact, as you said we’re very young and I think we’ve come a very long way. We’ve done quite a bit, yes there’s been problems, but like they say, growth brings problems and progress brings problems, but I think we have mastered a majority of our problems, and we’re working on the ones that we have now. We have people who are very, very dedicated, who have put in their pound of flesh into making this university what it is today. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far and I think that all of us should be because it’s our national university. Sunday will be a grand show because we will have all the flags from the various nations that are a part of Belize on display, and quite a number of people are going to be there.”

Guest speaker for the Belize City graduation ceremony is Prime Minister Said Musa, while University College of Belize alumnus, Valentino Shal, will deliver the guest speaker’s address in Punta Gorda.
