2 detained in jacking of Gov’t payroll
Meanwhile, two other Belize District residents are also being held by police in connection with a robbery that went down in the west on Thursday morning. According to police, two Belize City men, detained hours after the robbery, are believed to be the persons responsible for the payroll heist at the joint offices of the Ministry of Works and the Department of Transport in Santa Elena, Cayo. Roadblocks set up on the Western Highway intercepted a grey Buick with taxi license plates, which has since been identified as the getaway car used in the hold-up. Inside the vehicle, police also found five live rounds of thirty-eight-calibre ammunition. That information in addition to eyewitness accounts and investigations at the scene led to the detention of the two suspects. As we went to air tonight, the men detained had not yet been charged. Just after 11:00 on Thursday morning, two men armed with a handgun stole the Ministry of Works payroll and monies collected by transport officials and escaped in a car heading in the direction of Belize City. The money stolen totals over twelve thousand dollars in cash.
