UHS Debt, “A $95.6 Million U.D.P. Bukut”

John Briceño

After tracing how the loan had meandered through the courts in Belize, London, New York, Miami, Washington and Trinidad, Briceño pointed to the law firms that had benefitted from legal fees:

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“He decides to fight this judgment in courts. He has gone to seven courts all over the world (it’s like a James Bond movie).  And he lost in 5 out of 7 courts and guess who he hired to represent him?   No other than Denys Barrow S.C., his brother who boast that he charges one thousand dollars per hour.  So, while the Barrow family earns millions in lawyer fees, the Belizean people get a ninety-five million-dollar U.D.P. bukut! Let’s ask ourselves, how have Belizeans benefitted from a debt that was created in Jan 2013 by the U.D.P. for thirty-six point eight million?  Poor Belizeans have not benefitted; farmers have not benefitted, teachers, nurses, police officers, B.D.F. soldiers have not benefitted from this! Today this U.D.P. debt is at ninety-five million. And who benefitted?  Only the Barrows have benefitted in the millions from this illegal get rich legal hustle.  The C.C.J., Belize’s highest court has told P.M Barrow that his government must pay the debt which he created.  The C.C.J. is telling him he must pay. Is the P.M. a Senior Council, willfully disrespecting the highest court in the land?  Is this the legacy he wants to leave, where he continues to disrespect the rule of law? The P.M.’s arrogance, his hubris, his spitefulness, his vindictiveness is getting the worst of him and now behaving irrational like a man who has lost his reason.”
