PG Adjunct Teachers to be Replaced

Alamilla became chairperson of the institution back in November of 2017 and since then, the student population has doubled. There have also been various improvements at the facility. She contends that there was a lack of proper accounting and the proposed payment plan was designed to put in place proper controls. Alamilla acknowledges that applications for new teachers have already been accepted.

“There were absences for three days where students showed up to school and there were no teachers to deliver the lectures with the exception of two teachers. And so that is really where it has become a crisis because in many instances a lot of our students are coming from the villages. They have been complaining saying look I am paying bus fare, I am spending money on food and I am also having to pay childcare because this is an adult continuing education school. So they are complaining like we are coming here and nobody is here; what’s going on. And unfortunately we weren’t able to resolve it and we had just decided to part ways unless you are prepared to enter into an agreement with us based on the terms that we had.”

“What happens to those persons because we understand that they’ve been told that classes have been suspended until next week? So you are going to hire nine teachers by next week?”

“We have applicants already.”

“So, you are not interested in meeting with these teachers? They’re gone. Because they still want their jobs; they are asking…”

Lisel Alamilla

“Well they’ve told us…they have communicated. We are willing to talk to them; they weren’t willing to talk to us before.”

The Belize National Teachers Union did not make a comment, but its representatives including National President Elena Smith were in Punta Gorda today. The matter is likely to come up at a press conference planned for Friday.
