Corozal credit union rallies around manager
The saga of the Corozal credit union continues tonight as more details of Sunday’s general meeting emerge. News 5 has been reliably informed that in addition to reinstating general manager Vicente Canul of the St. Francis Xavier Credit Union, two other members of staff, David Vela and Rafael Dominguez, have also been asked to come back to work. The members of the credit union also voted to conduct an internal audit, to be paid for by the credit union, to ensure that in Canul’s absence, no accounts were tampered with to frame the general manager. Along those same lines, another resolution was passed ensuring that all legal fees incurred by Canul as a result of the allegations against him are to be paid by the credit union. Even though the Ministry of Co-operatives has already indicated that they intend to file charges against Canul based on several improprieties revealed in supervisory reports, Canul has yet to be arrested, and the members have asked their board to retrieve all documents from the authorities. News 5 attempted to get comment from Canul, but he told us that he has retained legal counsel and has no comment for the press. According to officials at the Ministry of Co-operatives, their investigations continue and they expect to wrap up their case by week’s end. The board of the St. Francis Xavier Credit Union will be meeting tonight to discuss all the resolutions recommended on Sunday.
