Sculptor produces biggest piece yet

Story Picture
The skills involved in this next story may not be called upon to save lives, but they certainly make life richer.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

It stands eight feet tall and is the biggest sculpture ever created by Curl Gordon. The piece represents family unity and is chiselled entirely from part of a mahogany that was found drifting along the coast. Gordon says he always wanted to do a design that depicts the relationship with his family.

“We unite together. Me and my sons, my daughters we all unite together, we work together, we share a lot and we have a lot of love. And this just comes to mind to me sometimes and I just put it together.”

But the masterpiece will not be on display in the Gordon’s home. This week, it was shipped to the United States where it will be displayed in the lobby of a hotel. In the twenty-six years that Gordon has been in the business, most of his larger works have been bought on the international market. According to Gordon, Belizeans have only expressed an interest in the smaller pieces he’s done.

“There are a lot of folks abroad that would come and purchase these large pieces from me. In the past I have had folks calling me from the states that I have not even met and they would say something like, oh my friend was just in Belize and they had passed by your little place and had seen this and seen that or whatever so I am interested.”

Gordon says most of the themes that are depicted in his sculptures come from the design of the wood itself because each piece has its own unique shape. Already he is working on another design, which will be the most expensive job he’s ever done…just how much? Gordon would not give us any figures but says the piece has already been sold.
