O.W. student injured in robbery on Vernon St.

Despite the strong presence of police, B.D.F. and tourism officers patrolling the streets of Belize City, it seems walking on one of the busiest streets, even in the middle of the morning, is not safe anymore. A young student from the Orange Walk District has reported being robbed while on Vernon Street at 10:00 a.m.; incidentally, the same spot where a shooting would take place two hours later. According to nineteen year old Alexander Perez of Carmelita Village, he was crossing the bridge at the corner of Vernon and Lakeview Streets when three men walked up to him and demanded money. Perez decided to give them five dollars, but his attackers weren’t satisfied with the donation. One of them grabbed him around the neck while the other two did a number on his pockets. They found the two hundred and twenty dollars Perez was carrying at the time and stole it, but not before forcefully pushing the student to the ground. Perez sustained injuries to his knee and eye in the incident and had to receive medical treatment at the K.H.M.H. Up to newstime tonight, police have yet to detain any suspects.
