BCAPSS Comes Out Against Marijuana Legalization, Opposition Leader Responds

Earlier in the newscast, Leader of the Opposition John Briceño lashed back at the P.M., over the legalization of marijuana.   Briceño also responded to the press release fired off on Tuesday by the Belize Catholic Association Principals of Secondary Schools which is against the legalization of marijuana.  In its release, the association says that Briceño’s idea “implies that the solution to our economic challenges is legalizing a drug that creates much harm to the developing mind.”  Briceño says that while he respects the association’s take, he retains his position that marijuana should be legalized.

“I respect their position. I believe differently but that does not mean that we can’t work together in trying to find a common ground if it can be done or not. There are so many other issues that are affecting our community. I think we want to hear them out to be talking about the other issues and not only this. The issue as I said the consumption of alcohol in this country is very destructive to the minds of young people and to many families. The whole issue of the economic challenges that we are facing as a nation that is creating serious social problems in our community. These things need to be addressed so we can’t take one thing by itself but look at all of the factors that are affecting fiber of this country.”
