4 die in freak drowning incident

Four men lost their lives while swimming in a lagoon in the Corozal District as family members watched helplessly. According to police reports, thirty-five year old Anastacio Uck was with friends and family members cooling off in the waters of the Four Mile Lagoon just outside Corozal Town on Saturday afternoon. Uck began having trouble in the water and eventually went under. Four people from the group rushed to his aid, but in a freak accident, three of them also disappeared beneath the surface. The fourth person, now identified as nineteen-year-old Diana Mesh, was safely recovered from the water. An intensive search was immediately launched for the missing men, but at around 6:00 p.m. all four bodies were found floating in another area of the lagoon. The other three drowning victims have been identified as fifteen-year-old Jose Mesh, seventeen-year-old Juan Mesh, and twenty-three year old Amilcar Wicab. Police officer Uck had been a member of the Orange Walk formation and was supposed to get married next month. News 5 has been made to understand that several areas of the lagoon had recently been dredged, creating sudden and deep drops in the floor of the popular swimming spot.
