11 Mexican Films to be Features in Belize Film Festival

The annual Belize International Film Festival opening ceremony takes place on Thursday at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts in Belize City. The red carpet affair leading up to the official event commences at six p.m. and will be broadcast on this station immediately following the evening’s newscast. The festival will feature numerous films from across the region. This year, Mexican filmmakers will have a strong presence at the festival with eleven Mexican films submitted to the competition by the Mexican Institute of Cinematography. The Mexican Cultural Institute in Belize will also be one of the venues of the festival, screening part of the official selection of documentaries this Saturday, November tenth. But to get you in the mood, tonight the classic Mexican Film “Macario” from 1959 will be projected on the patio. Officer in Charge of Cultural and Educational Affairs, Diego Sapien says that it is for everyone.

“Today we are going to have the screening of the Mexican movie; a very important Mexican film, Macario, that is one of the first film or the first Mexican film that was nominated as the foreign language film in the Oscars in 1959-1960. So that is very important for us. The Belize Film Festival is a big important part of the Mexican Institute. Over the last few years, we have worked very closely with Suzette Zayden, the Belize Film Commission, NICH in doing the Belize Film Festival. This year it is a special celebration for us because eleven films have been selected to be showcased at the Belize Film Festival too. The Mexican Institute this Saturday is going to be an official venue for the Film Festival on the tenth, from two p.m.  The official shorts [documentaries] are going to be shown here at the festival.”
