Robber comes up short at Scotia Bank

For a country supposedly in the grip of a major crime wave, things have been unusually quiet for the last week or so. Typical of the downturn in criminal fortunes was an attempt this morning to rob the Corozal branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia. According to police reports, around 9:45 this morning a man walked up to a bank teller and handed her a note. That note said he had a gun and if she acted normally, nobody would get hurt. He then handed her a bag, which the teller was supposed to fill with cash. Whether it was because the note lacked conviction or the would be robber lacked authority is not known, but the teller declined to co-operate and instead of handing over the loot, walked to the manager’s office and called the police. The cops responded quickly, but not before the hapless thief ran out of the building. Luck was not on his side, however, as he was positively identified by the bank’s security guard as Marvin Timothy Reyes. Reyes, a thirty-year-old former BDF soldier from Orange Walk, is now the subject of an intensive search by police.
