You will not find them in any Belikin calendar, not yet that is. But since the Mr. Nice Guy pageant debuted last year, a number of talented high school students have captivated their peers with an appeal all their own; and this year’s contestants are no exception.
Troy Spinal, 17 Years Old
“My name is Troy Spinal, a.k.a. Mr. Perseverance. I’m from SJC and I’m the bomb.”
Goe Tillett, 16 Years Old
“My name is Goe Tillett and I’m representing E.P. Yorke High School. That’s why you should come and watch this year’s Mr. Nice Guy.”

Sheldon Castillo, 18 Years Old
“I’m Sheldon Castillo representing SJC’s finest.”
The contestants are not avid sportsmen, so don’t expect to see a lot of flexing muscles on stage…only raw talent at its best.
Don Gillett, Organiser, Mr. Nice Guy Pageant
“These are various students from various high schools and we just put them up and see what they could do to entertain the people, apart from just playing sports and the usual things. So it’s also another inter-secondary school competition.”
The competitors promise to have fun while strutting their stuff, but they say they’re also out to win.
Troy Spinal
“I’m open minded, I’m very helpful also. I do everything and anything, you name it and I can do it, as most people say in Creole, Jack of all trades.”
Tyson Pyne, Rapping
“I’m nice, that’s why they call me nice guy, gyal a buck me up and ah ask me why.”
Levar Taylor
“My talent da wah lee skit. So nobody no the do skit, everybody just want dance and rap. So I come different, I come with a lee skit, so that’s what I wah surprise the crowd.”
While some contestants will try to gain points through entertainment, the other young men hope to win the hearts of the judges by highlighting issues affecting youths.
Wilford Felix
“I focus on issues that we’re facing in this country. And tomorrow night as my talent, I will say one of my many poems, “What has our Country Gone to”. That is a question to the father figures of this country and to the prominent people in society.”
Beauty contests may not be at the top of the list of things to do for many young men, but these youths say the contest is more than just looking good.
Sheldon Castillo
“Manhood is basically being able to stand up for what you believe in and just being able to represent as a man. And as a humble man, I know that this pageant will not make me less of a man, will probably make me more because I was brave enough to go up and represent my school. They had a lot of guys that could have went up, but they weren’t brave enough.”
Goe Tillett, 16 years old
“This is just one means pull you away from the gangs and the bad deeds that the youths nowadays are doing.”
The Mister Nice Guy Pageant gets underway at the Belize City Centre at 7:00p.m on Saturday night. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.
