Top students honoured for CXC performance
Crime may dominate the headlines, but while the bad guys are stealing the spotlight, some hard working scholars are getting ready for the future. News 5’s Jacqueline Woods caught up with these top students as they were honoured this morning.

At the seventh annual CXC awards ceremony, two hundred and eighty-six students received Certificates of Excellence after attaining six or more passes in the May/June 2001 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations. Chairman of the CXC National Committee Alan Genitty, says overall, Belizean students are doing well.

“I think the performance in our CSE examinations are probably due to many factors. Among them would be the amount of work that the BAPSS Association and the local registrar for CXC are doing in conducting workshops to sensitise teachers in regards to different issues that would affect their delivery of the learning and their productivity with the classroom.”
Plaques and Awards were presented to the two students who performed exceptionally based on the number of subjects they took and how well they scored. Jacqueline Usher of St. Catherine Academy came in first with seven grade ones and two grade two passes.

“I think that all the preparation was done ahead of time throughout our years in high school, but before the exam I just went over stuff that I didn’t feel confident about, and that was basically it.”

“So when you heard that you had topped the scores, how did you feel?”

“Proud of myself I guess.”

“I had expected to do well, but not this well.”
Equally proud is Gian Cho of Belmopan Comprehensive School. Cho came in second with six grade ones and two grade twos.

“As usual I studied every night before and exam and in the morning before the exam as well. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, just studied hard”

“So when you heard how well you did, how did you feel?”

“I didn’t know what to make of it at first, but afterwards, I was thankful for it. I was excited and all that and my family was very proud of me and I was very proud of myself.”
Guest speaker at this year’s awards ceremony was Sara Lee Hobbs. Hobbs, as a student of Belmopan Comprehensive School, attained outstanding results in the 1990 CSEC examinations. Today Hobbs, who holds a Masters Degree in International Business, is the Accounts Manager at the Bank of Nova Scotia. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.
Besides receiving a plaque, Jacqueline Usher also took home a computer with all accessories.
