Top Cop Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett Served with N.I.P. for RTA
Commander of Eastern Division South Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett would normally appear on the news for the community policing work he continues to do, but tonight the senior police officer is in the hot seat, facing tremendous scrutiny. Gillett was involved in a road traffic accident over the weekend. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday morning in Camalote Village, Cayo. It is reported that a parked black Wingle owned by twenty-six-year-old Sheraine Mas was hit by a black Hilux. Mas and her family were attending a Christmas social when they heard a loud bang. They went and made check and observed damages on the Wingle. They also saw the black Hilux driving away, so relatives of Mas decided to pursue the vehicle which led them to Gillett’s house. According to Acting Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, Gillett has accepted liability for the incident.
Chester Williams, Acting Commissioner of Police
“They observed a black Hilux going up the highway. The Hilux was followed by two individuals who were at the social gathering and it took them to the home of Mr. Howell Gillett. Reaching the home, Mr. Gillett alighted the vehicle. They spoke with him and he informed them that his vehicle was insured comprehensive and that the insurance would take care of the matter. The information was brought to my attention and I directed the police to ensure that all the formalities in respect of a traffic accident are complied d with. That was done, in other words Mr. Gillett gave a urine sample and he was also issued with notice of intended prosecution in respect of the accident and the matter is currently being investigated.”
Hipolito Novelo
“Sir do you know whether or not or did Mr. Gillett say or did the investigators officers say that he was consuming alcohol prior to the accident?”
“Well he gave a urine sample so we will wait until the result of that comes in. I’m not going to speculate or assume, I will wait for the results to come in.”
Hipolito Novelo
“How long after was that urine sample provided?”
Chester Williams
“It was provided practically almost immediately.”
Hipolito Novelo
“Did he mention what caused the accident or how it happened?”
Chester Williams
“I don’t have that information but the matter is being investigated still.”
As you heard, Williams would not comment whether or not Gillett was under the influence or had consumed alcohol prior to the incident as reports suggest. Gillett refused a request for an interview He says, however, that the matter is trivial. Gillett has also refuted claims that he was under the influence. Using his Facebook, Gillett commented that it is the “farthest thing from the truth. Haters abound which won’t stop me from being positive.” He continued, “One evil person behind this. My vehicle hit another and it’s covered comprehensively which will take care of itself. I remain positive. Despite the negatives, the work continues.”
