“Jolly Rancher” in coma after bar brawl
A bar brawl has left a popular young man clinging to life in a coma, while his family prays for his recovery and hopes for justice. Police say they visited the Coconut Bar in the Savannah area of San Ignacio where they found blood on the floor, broken chairs and stones. Patrons at the bar told police of a fight, which involved twenty-one year old Rodrick Matura better known as “Jolly Rancher” and seven other men. Today News 5 spoke with a distraught Cynthia Sutherland, Rodrick’s mom.

“A young man that he had a problem with before, just take his wallet and his cap, and he decided to call for assistance, one of his friends. His friend came by and got back his cap and his wallet. Apparently, the guy that took it away from him didn’t take it lightly, so he went and got his gang members, or I don’t know, just a group of young men and they came back to attack him. But the hotel, or the owner of the bar apparently knew these guys and what they’re capable of doing, and told him and two of his friends to go hide in a room in the same bar. But apparently, knowing that the hotel wasn’t too far away, my son Rodrick decided to make a run for it to the hotel where he was saying. When he got through the backdoor, some guys were out there already waiting for him. And the understanding that I got, they start stoning him with rocks, cement blocks. And I don’t know if it’s a whole group of them just hold him down and beat him up right there, beat him and left him there to die.”

“He’s very critical. He got a brain fracture, three bones broken in the skull, and the brain is swollen, he has bleeding in the brain. He got surgery Monday morning 8:30, but the doctor said he’s still not out of the woods yet, so he’s in a critical condition.”
“Jolly Rancher” is a well-known musician and member of the Pantempters steel band.
