Rehabilitation of Krooman Lagoon Still in the Works

The Belize City Council still has plans to restore the natural habitat of Krooman Lagoon. But before that is done, the residents living on the water reserve will need to be relocated. In October 2018, Canadian engineers joined Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner on a visit to Krooman Lagoon to assess the living conditions of residents there and identify alternative housing solutions. According to Mayor Wagner, it is a long term plan which will require external funding. The council has applied for grant funding from the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre.

“That grant funding if approved will give us the ability to acquire the necessary land to relocate those persons that make their homes over the Krooman Lagoon. Thereafter, when we are able to relocate them then we have the ability to then rehabilitate Krooman Lagoon into its natural habitat. It will form a part of the tourism tour of Belize City where people can do bird watching, you could take a tour in that area. Thereafter the other component is a group of London who has committed to us to fund the constructions of the homes.”
