Opposition Leader Urges G.O.B. to Assist Sugar Cane Farmers

P.U.P. Orange Walk South Area Representative Jose Abelardo Mai is on record speaking on the bad conditions of sugar roads and his concerns over the disbursement of monies earmarked for the rehabilitation of sugar roads in his division. The government allocated three hundred thousand dollars for the upgrading of the roads in the Orange Walk District. The monies, however, were reportedly disbursed by U.D.P. Area Representatives Gaspar Vega of Orange Walk North and Elodio Aragon Junior of Orange Walk East. Mai says that both U.D.P. area reps contracted known U.D.P. supporters to upgrade roads in their constituencies rather than in areas of priority. P.U.P. Leader, John Briceño, agreed.

“I think it is disgraceful in what the government has been doing. That allocated I think is three hundred thousand for the fixing of sugar roads in the north and they split that in half. What has happened in Orange Walk is even worse because the two U.D.P. representatives decided to share that money among themselves and now they are just fixing the roads of their supporters. I think it is disgraceful. It is shameful. I think that the Prime Minister as the very least should act quickly and fix that and make sure that we have enough funding to be able to fix the roads of our sugar cane farmers. When you look, the ministers and their roads; John Saldivar was boasting about the cement street that they have done in Belmopan. I am happy for them but that road passes in front of his house. It passes in front of many other high ranking U.D.P.s. Good for them but what is more important for me is the productive sector and we need to help our sugar cane farmers as soon as possible.”
