Bar Association to Host Public Forum on I.C.J. Vote
The Bar Association is organizing a public forum in the coming days and an expert in international law has been invited to discuss the issue of the I.C.J. In an effort to advance the ongoing public discourse, Professor Stephen Vasciannie will be providing an updated legal opinion on the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute and whether it should be resolved at the International Court of Justice. In her address during the launch of the legal year, President Cheryl-Lyn Vidal spoke of the upcoming forum in the context of a weeklong series of activities.
Cheryl-Lyn Vidal, President, Bar Association
“This conference will be part of an entire week of activity and during that law week the bar also intends to honor two persons it considers have made a tremendous contribution to the profession and to the system and to public service in general. They are retired justices Gonzales and Lucas. One of the major activities in that week would also be a public forum in relation to the upcoming I.C.J. referendum. The aim of the association is to assist in public awareness and education so that voters can make a properly informed decision.”
Stephen Vasciannie is a professor of International Law at UWI, Mona Campus. He has been Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States of America and the Organization of American States. The Bar Association will finalize a date, as well as a venue, in the days ahead.
