Ombudsman asks police to treat Thompson fairly
While police look for leads in this latest double murder, a previous homicide remains very much on their minds. It has been a week since Corporal Fernando Rosado was shot to death, but the prime suspect, Kirk “Psycho” Thompson, remains at large. Police believe that Thompson is still in the country, perhaps even the city, but they have been unable to pinpoint his whereabouts. Today, as police continue with their search, Ombudsman Paul Rodriguez issued a statement calling on authorities to uphold the law and not resort to more senseless violence when they finally close in on their suspect. Rodriguez says even though the crime was a brutal one and what he considers to be a direct attack on our society, the police must give Thompson a chance to defend himself in court where he will be given a fair trial. Rodriguez says Thompson’s family has been in touch with him asking him to do what he can to make sure that their son is protected whenever he is brought into police custody.
Paul Rodriguez, Ombudsman
“Members of his family have been in touch with me since Saturday night. And just this morning, shortly before I made a statement on the matter, the father contacted me and I made a plea to him to try and get in touch with his son and reassure him that if he gave himself up or express the willingness to give himself then I would do whatever I could to make sure that his rights are respected and he is treated properly.
I would like to make a plea to him personally to please give yourself up. If you wish, get in touch with me or get in touch with the lawyer of your choice and we will do what we can to make sure that you are protected, that your rights are respected. As a matter of fact, a few minutes ago I spoke to superintendent Crispin Jeffries and he told me that if he should get to find out where the man is, he would make sure that he would get in touch with the media and he would get in touch with other people and me to make sure that you know that everybody has a chance to witness how he is apprehended.”
Corporal Rosado was shot in the head after he and fellow officers went to Thompson’s house to apprehend him in connection with the shooting deaths of a security guard and Chinese businessman in two separate incidents.
