B.A.L. Fire Still Being Investigating

The National Fire Service continues to investigate the fire that broke out at Belize Aquaculture Limited near Placencia on Monday evening. We understand fire officials are still on the scene investigating the cause of the inferno that darkened the skies over Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa villages. It is expected that the fire investigation will conclude on Thursday and a report will be issued to the media. At around three o’clock employees on the compound noticed smoke emanating from the south portion of the building. By the time fire-fighters arrived, the raging inferno was out of control. It was left to burn through the night and fire-fighters were instructed to stand down as the building contained traces of ammonia. The blaze produced thick, dark smoke and residents of the surrounding villages were asked to take the necessary steps to protect themselves from the ammonia. Some residents, including children, reported feeling unwell throughout the night. NEMO South was activated for a brief period.
