Pedro Guerra Mena dies of cancer in Benque
Well known political personality Pedro Guerra Mena, also known as Don Jorge, died this morning in Benque Viejo after a long battle with cancer at the age of sixty-seven. A member of the United Democratic Party, Guerra served as Mayor of Benque from 1982 to 1983 and was a member of the House of Representatives for Cayo West from 1984 to 1989. Up until the time of his death, Guerra was a councillor of the Benque Viejo Town Board and served as Deputy Mayor until March 2000. Guerra is survived by his mother, his wife and twelve children. Funeral services will be announced later this week.
Meanwhile, citizens of the twin towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio are also mourning the loss of one of their own. Earlier today, it was announced that Maximino “Mike” Salazar died on Monday. Salazar served as a member of the San Ignacio Town Board from 1984 to 1988 for the UDP and was a well-known businessman in Santa Elena. Salazar will be laid to rest on Friday.
