Decorative plants: more than a holiday gift
You might not be able to have a real Christmas tree in your house this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some other plant-life in your neck of the woods. Today, News 5 Ann-Marie Williams took to the streets of Belize City to dig up some greenery to deck your halls.
Elena Usher, Owner, The Green Patch
“Specfically for Christmas we have poinsettias, which is the traditional plant for Christmas, but we have all of the other stock that you see in here. People tend to like hibiscus for Christmas, the blooming ones, the little pine trees, that’s another special one for Christmas. And after that we have things like palladiums and ferns and everything else that we have in the nursery.”

Elena Usher, owner of The Green Patch, also has five different colours of poinsettias in her Magazine Road nursery. These traditional Christmas plants, home to neighbouring Mexico, are ideal for holiday gifts.

“We have traditional red, there’s white, pink, a Monet colour, which is a cream background with sprinkles of pink on it and then there’s another one called Puebla, which is pink and white, with a sort of tie-dye colour in it.”
And if poinsettias aren’t your style, Geraldine Sosa of St. Thomas Plants, who has been in the business for over twenty years, might entice you with something from her garden.

“We have spatafiliums, that’s the things that we’re having most this year. They are beautiful, very full and very attractive. So that’s the thing that we’re trying to sell this year. We also have antiriums and we have Areca and yantibella palms. We have those in good quantity, so we’re trying sell those this year.”
According to Sosa, plant sales don’t usually increase around this time of year. However, she’s hoping that will all change.

“When you give a plant, you give life, that’s life and the thing is that the plant keeps on going as long as you take good care of it. If you buy something else, maybe they are not satisfied with it or they don’t like it, but basically most people like plants.”
Elena Usher
“I would like to tell them to come in and give a plant. Most people will have everything, so a plant would be something different for them to give as a gift. It would be special I think.”
Sosa admits that a few customers have already made early purchases.

“I’ve sold for gifts. A number of people came in and bought some of our spatafilium. They went crazy when they say it, and they bought a few of them for gifts. Most definitely, I would encourage people to buy plants. A lot of these plants are hard work, we put a lot of hard work in them, so that they can look attractive and nice for your homes. I would definitely encourage people to come in and see what we have and get some for their home and also for gifts.”
